As any great angler will tell you sneakiness is the single best tool, you have at your disposal. You can have the best poll, best line, and best lure but without the ability to get to the fish, equipment is meaningless. Enter the Minn Kota 65. With its whisper, quiet 65lbs of thrust it is able to maneuver into position quickly. The fish will not know what hit them. In addition, changing positions quickly is a snap with this bow-mounted first mate. The battery life seems to be slightly better than its predecessors lasting over four hours with unaffected performance. As with all Minn Kota’s the weed less prop allows for simple clear cutting of vegetation as you motor into those thick bass filled areas.

The foot pedal control, as with most trolling motors, is easy to use but offers that locked down feeling. There is an optional wireless control system that works seamlessly well the first few times out. However after several times out it seemed to lose connection with the motor more times than not. With 20′ of boat in a tight dock area the last thing you want is loss of control. Especially when you have that perfect twenty pound on the line. Though powerful and quiet, I would not recommend exceeding the 23′ boat limit on this motor.
The deploy assist leaves a little to be desired. The concept of being able to place and remove the motor with the simple step of the foot is great in theory. However, as one quickly discovers it is often in need of some close assistance to actually get it in and out of the water. Truth be told the guide rope lasted about three times before it just became an ineffective damp string.
Overall I have to say that compared to some of the trolling motors I have had in the past, the Minn Kota 65 has the power and quiet running to allow for great fishing. It is sturdy construction and ease of mounting allows it to be up and running for years to come in a matter of minutes. The power and control you need for the price you can afford.
