Minn Kota Pontoon Trolling Motor
Review By Bassbasher
Trolling motors are a preferred method of propulsion when fishing or boating in areas where noise and wake need to be kept to a minimum. Trolling motors, including those used on pontoon boats are generally electrically powered by an onboard battery. The motor is smaller than the main engine and is usually fixed to the bow or stern of a boat. Minn-Kota offers a design that is weed proof, for trolling in shallow water and also features a break away design detaching from the mount upon impact from any direction.
The trolling motors are made with stainless steel parts and hardware, so they can be used in salt or less than fresh water. The Minn Kota E-drive series are perfect for use on pontoon boats, as primary or secondary propulsion, and can be used on lakes with gasoline restrictions. The E-drive series will move a full size pontoon boat up to 5 mph for 2 hours on a single charge.
The E-drive motors feature electronic throttle control and a bolt on transom bracket for mounting the motor to the pontoon boat. As with all trolling motors, the E-drive also features the breakaway safety feature to protect the motor and boat from underwater hazards.
Installing a trolling motor on a pontoon boat can be beneficial if you plan on traveling through bodies of water with gasoline restrictions, in areas requiring no wake or low noise disturbance, are not needing to travel quickly or would like an efficient alternative mode of propulsion, other than the main boat motor. I have found the trolling motor a smoother method of propulsion when not traveling over great distances or working in shallow water. The mounting of the Minn-Kota trolling motor makes it a safe, fuel efficient alternative to using the main motor when cruising on a pontoon boat.
