The 55 on the Min Kota Endura 55 refers to pounds of thrust and is not a measurement of size. That translates to be plenty of power for an eighteen foot fishing boat. Minn Kota 55 keeps on going.You need to figure out what the numbers mean before you buy.
The Minn Kota 55 comes in several different configurations. The transom mount is the least expensive and is operated by the handle on the motor. The other models are steered and operated by the use of a foot pedal and cost quite a bit more.
The transom mount seemed a little loose at first but after re-tightening it did quite well. There are five forward speeds and three reverse. That is a lot of variety so it worked well in different situations.
Going through the weeds is one of the things that really drain your battery. The Min Kota 55 has a weed-less propeller that does not bog down or tangle up in the water. The propeller was designed by Roland Martin and is of a swept back design. If anyone has a lot of experience fishing it would be him.
The manufacturer puts a lot of faith in the windings of the motor which are larger than most. It does run cooler and quieter than other motors I have used. They claim it runs two hundred degrees cooler than the competition which makes sense with the larger windings.
Make sure you get the shorter shaft if you are transom mounting it on a small boat. It does telescope, but it could still be too long, making it quite uncomfortable to operate.
The drive shaft, which is flexible and made of a composite material, is designed to not break if you run into something under the water. That part of the motor has a lifetime warranty.
There is a lever that is pretty easy to operate to lift the motor out of the water. It can be done with one hand and is strong enough to hold the motor up at high speeds and in rough water.
Another good feature is the variable speed, instead of the "on-off", I have experienced with other motors.
Everything today seems to be digital and that’s how it is with the Min Kota Endura 55. It has some kind digital maximizer that makes the motor run five times longer than expected.
A lot of times people buy trolling motors that are too large. Check the chart for your size boat before you buy.

It is a motor that is able to get you where you want to go and bring you back.
